The Patek Philippe Calatrava: a short history
The Calatrava started in 1932 with reference 96, the year the Stern family bought Patek Philippe. It was a small round case, a clean dial and nothing else, and it set the template for the dress watch as we still know it. The name comes from the Calatrava cross Patek adopted as its emblem in 1887.
Ninety years on the idea hasn't changed: a thin case, a legible dial and finishing you only notice up close. In 2026 Patek added a Calatrava with a 24-hour alarm, showing the line still has room to move.

Discontinued Calatravas collectors hunt
The 96 is where Calatrava collecting starts. The 3919, with its hobnail Clous de Paris bezel, defined the look for a generation, and the 5119 and 5196 carried it into the 2000s before the 6119 replaced them. 6119 or 5196: what changed?
The 6119 replaced the 5196 and 5119 in 2021. It's larger at 39mm, has a new hand-wound movement with a longer power reserve, and brings back the Clous de Paris bezel.

For a dress watch, 39mm suits most wrists and slides under a cuff. Smaller vintage Calatravas around 31 to 36mm wear beautifully if you like a classic look.
