The Patek Philippe Aquanaut: a short history
Patek introduced the Aquanaut in 1997 with reference 5060A. It took the rounded octagonal shape of the Nautilus, added an embossed checkerboard dial, and put it on a composite tropical strap built to handle salt water and heat. It was aimed at a younger buyer than the Nautilus, and it found one.
When Patek ended the steel Nautilus 5711 in 2021, a lot of that demand moved to the steel Aquanaut, which is why the 5167A now trades well above its retail price.

Early and discontinued Aquanauts
The original 5060A from 1997 and the steel references that followed it in the early 2000s are now real collector pieces, especially with their original strap and papers. Precious-metal versions that have left the catalog, such as the rose gold 5167R, also have a dedicated following. If you own one, call before you list it anywhere.

Aquanaut or Nautilus: which should I buy?
The Nautilus is dressier, on a metal bracelet, with the stronger resale. The Aquanaut is sportier, on a composite strap, and easier to wear hard. If it's your first Patek sports watch and you want to wear it daily, the Aquanaut is the easier choice.
Why is the Aquanaut so hard to get at retail?
Patek makes small numbers and allocates them to established clients. After the steel Nautilus 5711 ended in 2021, much of that demand moved to the steel Aquanaut. Buying from an established secondary dealer is how most people get one now.
