The Omega Seamaster: a short history

Omega introduced the Seamaster name in 1948 for a water-resistant dress watch, then built it into a true dive line with the Seamaster 300 in 1957, the same year as the Speedmaster. The Diver 300M arrived in 1993 with its wave dial and helium escape valve, and two years later it went on James Bond's wrist in GoldenEye. Bond has worn a Seamaster in every film since.

Today the Seamaster is Omega's broadest family, from the 600-metre Planet Ocean to the Aqua Terra, which is a dress watch more than a diver.

Discontinued Seamasters collectors hunt

The 2531.80, the blue wave-dial Diver 300M from the Pierce Brosnan Bond films, is the one buyers ask for most. The 2254.50 and the early Co-Axial Diver 300Ms that followed have their own following, as does the original Planet Ocean 2200.50 from 2005 with its orange numerals. Vintage Seamaster 300s from the 1960s sit at the top of the collector market. If you have one, we'll make you an offer the same day.

Buy an Omega Seamaster in Newport Beach

Newport Beach is a dive-watch town, and we keep more Seamasters in stock than most dealers in Orange County. You see the watch in person at 3388 Via Lido Ave, compare a Diver 300M against a Planet Ocean on your own wrist, and leave with it the same day. Every watch is pressure-checked, timed and inspected before sale. Free insured FedEx shipping and a 7-day return window come with every purchase.

Sell your Omega Seamaster

We buy Seamasters outright with same-day payment, papers or not. Bring the watch in or send photos and we'll quote you a real number based on current trades. Limited editions and Bond references get the strongest offers. See sell or trade your watch.

Trade your Seamaster for a Submariner

The Seamaster to Rolex Submariner trade is one of the most common we handle. Both are 300-metre divers, and the Submariner holds its value better, so plenty of owners make the move once they're sure they love the style. We credit your Seamaster against the Sub and you settle the difference in one visit.

Do Seamasters hold their value?

Most current Seamasters trade below retail on the secondary market. That is the honest answer, and it is good news if you are buying to wear: you get a Master Chronometer dive watch for well under list. Limited Bond editions and clean vintage pieces are the exceptions. Weighing the Seamaster against Omega's other icon? Our Speedmaster page covers the Moonwatch.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the Diver 300M and the Planet Ocean?

The Diver 300M is thinner, 42mm, with the wave dial and a helium valve on the case side. The Planet Ocean is rated to 600m, heavier, and comes in 43.5mm and 39.5mm. For most people who swim but don't scuba dive, the Diver 300M is the better daily watch.

Seamaster or Rolex Submariner: which should I buy?

The Submariner holds its value better and is the more recognized watch. The Seamaster costs considerably less and its Master Chronometer movement is technically excellent. If resale matters, buy the Sub. If value for money matters, buy the Seamaster.

Is the Aqua Terra a good everyday watch?

Yes. It has no rotating bezel, a slimmer profile and 150m water resistance, so it works with a suit and in the ocean. It's one of the most versatile watches Omega makes.

How much is my Seamaster worth?

Reference, condition, papers and whether it's a limited edition all move the number. Call EUROWATCH OC at 949-994-0114 or visit our Newport Beach showroom for a same-day offer.

Do Seamasters hold their value?

Most current Seamasters trade below retail. Limited Bond editions and vintage Seamaster 300s are the exceptions. Buy one to wear, not to resell.

Can I trade my Seamaster for a Submariner?

Yes. We credit your Seamaster against a Submariner or any other watch in stock, and you settle the difference in the same visit.

Which Seamaster did James Bond wear?

Pierce Brosnan wore the Diver 300M 2531.80 with a blue wave dial. Daniel Craig wore several, including the Planet Ocean and later Diver 300M versions. We buy and sell the Bond references regularly.
