The Rolex Daytona: a short history

Rolex launched the Cosmograph Daytona in 1963 as a chronograph built for racing drivers, with a tachymeter bezel for reading average speed. It was named for the Daytona International Speedway, and for its first decade it sold slowly. The watches that lingered in cases in the 1960s are now the most valuable Rolexes on earth.

The "Paul Newman" dials, exotic-dial versions of references like the 6239 and 6241, turned a slow seller into a legend once the actor's own 6239 surfaced and sold for millions. The manual-wind era ran through the 6263 and 6265. In 1988 Rolex moved to an automatic movement with the 16520, using a Zenith El Primero base, then to the in-house 4130 in the 116520 in 2000. The current 126500LN, introduced in 2023, refined the ceramic Cerachrom bezel model.

Demand has never cooled. A steel Daytona still carries a multi-year waitlist at authorized dealers, which pushes buyers to the pre-owned market where a clean example trades above retail. It is one of the few watches where buying certified and ready-to-wear often costs the same or less than waiting years for a boutique to call.

Sell your Rolex Daytona in Newport Beach

You can sell your Daytona to EUROWATCH OC in one visit, with or without the original box and papers. Bring the watch in or send photos, and we authenticate and appraise it on the spot, quote a fair number based on current market data, and pay the same day if you accept. The Daytona is one of the strongest sellers in the market, so clean examples get strong offers.

If you own a rare or vintage Daytona and want to maximize the return, consignment is worth a conversation. For exotic dials and low-production references, we handle the buyer and paperwork and can often net you more. We will walk you through both routes honestly.

Trade or upgrade your Daytona

Trading is the cleanest way to move from steel to gold, from a Zenith Daytona into a current ceramic model, or out of a Daytona and into a Submariner or GMT-Master II. We value your watch fairly, apply it toward whatever you want next, and you cover the difference. Browse our full Rolex collection for current inventory.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a Rolex Daytona worth?

A pre-owned steel Rolex Daytona typically trades above its retail price because of demand and waitlists, with gold and vintage references ranging much higher and exotic-dial "Paul Newman" models reaching into the millions. Value depends on the reference, dial, year, condition, and paperwork. For a precise figure on your Daytona, call EUROWATCH OC Newport Beach at 949-994-0114 for a free valuation.

Why is the steel Daytona so hard to buy?

Rolex produces the steel Daytona in limited numbers relative to demand, so authorized dealers maintain long waitlists. Most buyers turn to the certified pre-owned market, where a Daytona is available immediately, often at or near what they'd pay after years of waiting.

Where can I sell my Rolex Daytona in Orange County?

EUROWATCH OC in Newport Beach buys Rolex Daytonas directly, with no consignment wait. We authenticate and appraise on the spot and pay the same day, with or without box and papers. Visit the showroom or call 949-994-0114 for a free offer.

What is a Paul Newman Daytona?

A Paul Newman Daytona is a vintage Daytona (references like the 6239, 6241, 6263 and 6265) fitted with an "exotic" Art Deco dial. Named after the actor who wore a 6239, these dials are rare and command the highest prices of any Daytona.

Does EUROWATCH OC authenticate Rolex watches?

Yes. Every Daytona we sell is authenticated in-house by specialists, and we authenticate a watch you already own as part of any purchase, sale, or trade. We verify the movement, case, dial, bezel, bracelet, and serial numbers.
