Why is it called the Nautilus?

After the submarine in Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. The case shape comes from a ship's porthole, with the two side hinges standing in for the bolts that seal one.

What was the original Nautilus reference?

Why does the Nautilus have a hinged case?

Was the steel Nautilus discontinued?

Yes. Patek Philippe ended production of the steel Nautilus 5711/1A in 2021, after fifteen years and a level of demand the company had decided was distorting how the brand was seen.

Why was the 5711 discontinued?

Thierry Stern has said publicly that he did not want Patek Philippe reduced to a single steel sports watch. The 5711 had come to dominate attention at a house built on complications.

What was the olive green 5711?

Reference 5711/1A-014, released immediately after the discontinuation announcement in 2021 with an olive green dial, a colour never used in the collection before. It listed at 34,890 dollars and traded far above that.

What is the Patek Philippe Cubitus?

A squared sports watch collection launched in 2024, with an integrated bracelet and a horizontally embossed dial. It is Patek's first entirely new men's collection since the Aquanaut arrived in 1997.

When was the Cubitus released?

In October 2024, at a dedicated launch event rather than at a watch fair. It was the first new Patek collection of any kind since the Twenty~4 in 1999.

Why did Patek launch a new collection?

What is an annual calendar?

A calendar that knows which months have 30 days and which have 31, so it only needs correcting once a year at the end of February. Patek patented the mechanism in 1996.

What is a perpetual calendar?

A calendar that also tracks the four-year leap year cycle, so it needs no correction until 2100 if the watch keeps running. Patek built the first perpetual calendar wristwatch in 1925.

What is the difference between an annual and a perpetual calendar?

February. An annual calendar needs one correction each year because it does not track leap years. A perpetual calendar does, which makes it considerably more complex and more expensive.

What is a minute repeater?

A watch that chimes the time on demand using hammers and gongs. Patek tunes each one by ear, and Thierry Stern personally listens to every repeater before it leaves the manufacture.

What is a split-seconds chronograph?

A chronograph with two seconds hands, letting you time a second event without stopping the first. Also called a rattrapante. It is one of the harder complications to build and regulate.

What is a world time watch?

A watch showing all 24 time zones at once through a rotating city ring and 24-hour disc. Patek has built them since 1937, using a mechanism developed by the Geneva watchmaker Louis Cottier.

What is a flyback chronograph?

A chronograph that resets and restarts from zero with a single press, without stopping first. It was developed for pilots, and Patek uses it in the steel Nautilus 5980 and elsewhere.

What is a tourbillon?

How a Patek Philippe works

Are Patek Philippe watches automatic?
