How does a Rolex watch work?

A Rolex runs on a coiled mainspring that releases energy through a gear train. An escapement doles that energy out in tiny regular pulses, and a balance wheel oscillating several times a second keeps those pulses even. No electronics are involved.

Do Rolex watches have a battery?

No. Every Rolex in the current catalogue is mechanical and runs without a battery. The only battery-powered models Rolex ever built were the Oysterquartz references, discontinued around 2001.

Are all Rolex watches automatic?

Every model Rolex currently produces is self-winding, using the Perpetual rotor that spins with wrist movement to wind the mainspring. Some vintage and dress references were hand-wound, but nothing in the modern catalogue is.

How does a Rolex keep time without a battery?

The balance wheel is the timekeeper. It swings back and forth at a fixed frequency, most modern Rolex calibres at eight beats per second, and the gear train counts those swings to drive the hands.

How accurate is a Rolex?

Rolex certifies every watch as a Superlative Chronometer, accurate to within minus two and plus two seconds per day after casing. That standard is tighter than the COSC chronometer certification the movement passes first.

Was Rolex the first automatic watch?

Why does my Rolex stop when I'm not wearing it?

Does a Rolex tick or sweep?

Should my Rolex make a noise when I move my wrist?

Should a Rolex be kept on a watch winder?

A winder is convenience, not maintenance. It matters most on a Sky-Dweller or other calendar model you would rather not reset. A quality winder causes no harm, and leaving a watch stopped causes none either.

How does the GMT function work?

A GMT-Master II runs a 24-hour hand alongside the normal hands, read against a 24-hour bezel. The local hour hand jumps independently in one-hour steps, so you can change time zones without stopping the watch. Rotating the bezel adds a third zone.

How does the Sky-Dweller annual calendar work?

The Sky-Dweller reads month position through twelve small apertures around the dial and knows which months have thirty days, so the date only needs correcting once a year at the end of February. The fluted Ring Command bezel selects what the crown adjusts.

Water resistance

Are Rolex watches waterproof?

Rolex rates every Oyster case as waterproof to a stated depth. Most models are rated to 100 metres, the Submariner to 300 metres, the Sea-Dweller to 1,220 metres and the Deepsea considerably further.

Can a Rolex get wet?

Yes, provided the crown is screwed down fully and the gaskets are sound. An Oyster case with the crown left unscrewed is not sealed, and that is how most water damage happens.

Can I swim in a Rolex?

Yes. Any Oyster model rated to 100 metres or more handles swimming without difficulty. Screw the crown down first and rinse the watch afterwards if you have been in a pool.

Can I shower with a Rolex?

Can a Rolex go in salt water?

Can a Submariner go deeper than its rated depth?

Rolex tests to a margin above the stated 300 metres, but the rating assumes fresh gaskets and a properly sealed crown. On a watch several years past its last service, treat the number as a ceiling rather than a promise.

Can I wear a Rolex in a sauna or hot tub?

No. Heat expands the case and gaskets at different rates and degrades the seals, and a hot tub combines heat with chemicals. This is one of the fastest ways to compromise a watch that is otherwise waterproof.

Was the Rolex Oyster the first waterproof watch?

What's the difference between a Submariner Date and a No-Date?

Pepsi or Batman: which GMT-Master II is better?

What do the Rolex nicknames mean?

Why is that Rolex called the Bruce Wayne?

Which Rolex models were discontinued in 2026?

At Watches and Wonders in April 2026 Rolex dropped the GMT-Master II Pepsi in steel and white gold, the white gold Submariner known as the Cookie Monster, Datejust 41 Azzurro variants and several diamond-dial Yacht-Master references.

Did Rolex discontinue the Pepsi?

In practical terms yes. References 126710BLRO and 126719BLRO were absent from Rolex's 2026 catalogue and dealers stopped receiving deliveries. EUROWATCH OC is currently trading the steel Pepsi in the 18,000 to 22,000 dollar range.

Is Rolex replacing the Pepsi with a Coke?

No Coke appeared in 2026. A red and black bezel has been rumoured for years and Rolex has said nothing. Anyone telling you a launch date is guessing.

Yes. The white gold Submariner reference 126619LB with its blue dial and blue bezel was absent from the 2026 catalogue, ending one of the shorter runs in the modern Submariner line.

Did Rolex discontinue the Batman?

When was the Hulk discontinued?

Rolex retired the Submariner 116610LV in 2020 when the 41mm generation arrived. Its replacement kept the green bezel but returned to a black dial, which is why the Hulk has no direct successor.

Will Rolex bring back the Hulk?

On watches from around 2005 onward it is engraved on the rehaut, the inner ring between the dial and the crystal, at six o'clock. On older watches it sits on the case between the lugs and only shows with the bracelet removed.

How do Rolex serial numbers work?

Until 2010 serials ran in rough sequence, so the number maps to a production year. After that Rolex moved to randomised alphanumeric serials that carry no date information. Our Rolex serial number lookup covers both.

How do I find out what year my Rolex was made?

If the serial is sequential, match it against a production chart. If it is a random serial from 2010 onward, the year comes from the warranty card or service records instead, because the number itself will not tell you.

What is a Rolex random serial number?

An eight-character mix of letters and numbers introduced around 2010, issued out of order specifically so the production date cannot be read from it. Anyone claiming to date one from the number alone is guessing.
