The Royal Oak Offshore: a short history

Audemars Piguet released the first Offshore, reference 25721ST, in 1993. Emmanuel Gueit took the Royal Oak and made it 42mm and nearly 14mm thick, with rubber-clad pushers and crown. It was so large for the time that people inside AP called it the Beast. Then came the limited editions that defined the line: the blackened End of Days in 1999 and the 48mm titanium T3 in 2003.

The Offshore is louder than the Royal Oak by design. It brought rubber straps, ceramic and oversized chronographs into Audemars Piguet's catalog.

Trade your Offshore

Common moves we handle: an Offshore toward a Royal Oak Jumbo for something thinner, or toward a Richard Mille for something lighter and louder. We value your Offshore fairly, apply it to the next watch, and you cover the difference. Details on our sell and trade page.

Does the Royal Oak Offshore hold its value?

Less reliably than the Royal Oak. Most Offshores trade below the equivalent steel Royal Oak and many trade near or below retail, because there are far more variations and less demand per reference. The limited editions from the 1990s and early 2000s are the exception. If resale is your priority, buy the Royal Oak. If you want the Offshore's presence on the wrist, buying on the secondary market is where the value is. This is not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the Royal Oak and the Royal Oak Offshore?

The Offshore is larger, thicker and sportier, with rubber-clad crown and pushers, interchangeable straps and typically 100m of water resistance. The Royal Oak is the thinner 1972 original on an integrated bracelet, rated to 50m.

Is the Royal Oak Offshore a good investment?

Most Offshores trade below the equivalent Royal Oak and often near retail. Early limited editions such as the End of Days and T3 are the exceptions. This is not financial advice.

What size Offshore should I buy?

The 43mm chronograph is the core model and wears large. The 42mm Diver wears slightly smaller. If your wrist is under about 6.75 inches, try the 37mm references.

Rubber strap or bracelet on an Offshore?

Rubber is lighter, more comfortable in heat and suits the Offshore's character. Current models use a quick-change system, so you can own both and switch without tools.

How much is my Royal Oak Offshore worth?

It depends heavily on the reference, material and whether it's a limited edition. Call EUROWATCH OC at 949-994-0114 with the full reference for a same-day offer.

Can I trade my Offshore toward a Richard Mille?

Yes. We credit your Offshore against a Richard Mille or anything else in stock, and you settle the difference in one visit.
