The Most Popular Rolex Watches Of All Time

The Most Popular Rolex Watches Of All Time

Rolex has earned its title as "King" of watches for a good reason. This Swiss brand is the leader in luxury timepieces, and no matter where you are in the world, owning a Rolex is a symbol of success, prestige, and excellence. It's no surprise that Rolex is the most popular high-end watch brand, by a long shot. But we often get asked, which models are the most popular of all time?

Well, we’ve put together a list to answer that exact question. So, how do we define "most popular"? We base it on sales, customer interest, and market value to identify the most in-demand Rolex watches today.

Keep reading to see the most popular Rolex watches of all time!

Rolex Daytona

Rolex Daytona

Launched in 1963, the Cosmograph Daytona has since become Rolex's iconic chronograph collection, known for its exceptional performance and style.

Initially struggling in sales, the Daytona has transformed over time into one of the most coveted timepieces in the world. Once overlooked, it is now a central figure in both the Rolex lineup and the luxury watch-collecting community.

Whether vintage, discontinued, or modern, virtually every version of the Daytona has high demand, but three models stand out as the most sought-after:

1. Stainless Steel and Ceramic Daytona

First introduced in 2016, the stainless steel and ceramic Daytona quickly became the star of the collection. The reference 116500LN marked its debut, and in 2023, it was updated to the 126500LN. This model features a stainless steel case with a black Cerachrom ceramic bezel and a steel Oyster bracelet.

There are two dial choices: a white “Panda” dial with black rings around the subdials and a black dial with silver rings. Both configurations are highly coveted, and finding one at an authorized dealer is nearly impossible. Prices in the secondary market are often more than double the retail value.

2. Yellow Gold and Green Daytona “John Mayer”

The yellow gold Daytona, reference 116508, was also introduced in 2016, but its popularity skyrocketed after a 2019 video by John Mayer. Mayer’s endorsement of the green dial version and his prediction that it would become a future collectible fueled demand for this model.

The "John Mayer" Daytona is made entirely of 18k yellow gold, including the bezel and bracelet. Its bold green dial features red accents and was part of the discontinued Rolex watches in 2023.

With no direct replacement in sight, this model has become a top seller in the secondary market, sparking curiosity about whether the “Le Mans” Daytona will take its place as the new gold Daytona favorite.

3. Everose Gold Daytona “Rainbow”

Collectors have highly sought-after factory-set gem Daytona models, but when Rolex introduced the Everose gold Daytona ref. 116595RBOW in 2018, it took the market by storm. This luxurious chronograph, adorned with diamonds and vibrant sapphires, became an instant hit among celebrities and watch enthusiasts alike.

The Daytona “Rainbow” is made of 18k rose gold and features a bezel set with multi-colored sapphires. It is available in several versions, including black dial, full diamond pavé dial, and diamond pavé bracelet models. These rare pieces command hefty prices, often exceeding $350,000 in the secondary market.

The 116595RBOW was discontinued in 2023, but the 2024 126595RBOW model is poised to continue its reign as one of the most desirable Rolex models for both men and women.

Rolex Submariner

Rolex Submariner

Since its debut in 1953, the Rolex Submariner has evolved from a critical diving tool into one of the most iconic luxury sports watches.

While modern Submariners still maintain their diving prowess with features like 300-meter water resistance, luminous dials, and unidirectional rotating bezels, they are mostly worn today for their timeless style rather than their functional capabilities.

The Submariner comes in various metals and colors, making it one of Rolex's most sought-after collections. Among the wide range of Submariners, a few models stand out as particularly popular.

1. Stainless Steel Black Ceramic Submariner

The original Submariner, released by Rolex, featured a steel case, steel bracelet, black bezel, and black dial. This classic combination remains the go-to for Submariner enthusiasts, though modern versions now feature Cerachrom ceramic bezels instead of the older aluminum bezels.

For over six decades, Submariner models featured 40mm cases, but in 2020, Rolex updated the line to slightly larger 41mm cases. The current stainless steel and black ceramic Submariner references available today are:

  • No-Date Submariner 124060 (41mm)

  • Submariner Date 126610LN (41mm)

The last of the 40mm steel and black ceramic Submariner models were:

  • No-Date Submariner 114060 (40mm)

  • Submariner Date 116610LN (40mm)

2. Green Submariner

In 2003, Rolex introduced the first Submariner with a green bezel to celebrate the watch’s 50th anniversary. Since then, green Submariners have become some of the most desirable pieces in the Rolex lineup.

There have been three green Submariner references produced, all in stainless steel:

  • Submariner 126610LV “Starbucks” (2020 – Present)

  • Submariner 116610LV “Hulk” (2010 – 2020)

  • Submariner 16610LV “Kermit” (2003 – 2010)

The Kermit featured a black dial, while the Hulk had a striking green starburst dial. In 2020, Rolex returned to a black dial for Starbucks.

Green-bezel Submariners not only retail at a higher price but are also much more valuable on the secondary market. The discontinued Hulk model is particularly sought after, making it one of the most desirable Submariners.

3. Submariner “Bluesy”

Two-tone Submariner models, combining steel and gold, were historically less popular than the all-steel or all-gold versions. However, demand for the "Bluesy" models, characterized by their blue bezels and dials, has surged in recent years.

The two most recent models with Cerachrom ceramic bezels are:

  • Submariner 126613LB (41mm)

  • Submariner 116613LB (40mm)

Once available at lower prices in the pre-owned market, the "Bluesy" Submariners now command higher resale prices, often exceeding retail value on the secondary market.

Rolex Deepsea

Rolex Deepsea

In 2008, Rolex introduced the Deepsea, a remarkable dive watch designed to withstand extreme depths, with an impressive water resistance of 12,800 feet.

In 2012, James Cameron made history by completing the world’s deepest solo dive into the Mariana Trench, reaching an incredible depth of 35,787 feet below the Pacific Ocean’s surface. Rolex launched the Sea-Dweller Deepsea “James Cameron” model to commemorate this achievement in 2014.

What set the James Cameron version apart from the standard Deepsea was its distinctive D-Blue dial, which featured a striking blue-to-black gradient and a green "DEEPSEA" inscription matching the color of Cameron’s submersible.

Rolex has produced three different "James Cameron" Deepsea references, all with 44mm steel cases and black Cerachrom ceramic bezels:

  • Deepsea 136660 James Cameron (2022 – Present)

  • Deepsea 126660 James Cameron (2018 – 2022)

  • Deepsea 116660 James Cameron (2012 – 2018)

While the Deepsea was originally part of the Sea-Dweller collection, the latest model made it a standalone collection in 2022, marking a new era for this extreme dive watch.

Rolex GMT-Master II

Rolex GMT-Master II

The GMT-Master II, originally developed as a tool for pilots, has transformed into one of Rolex's most coveted and versatile models. Its striking design and the ability to track two time zones at once have made it a favorite among watch enthusiasts worldwide.

The GMT-Master II is available in various materials and colors. The most notable feature is its bi-colored 24-hour ceramic bezel, which has become a hallmark of the collection.

1. GMT-Master “Pepsi”

The “Pepsi” nickname comes from the iconic blue and red bezel, a combination first introduced with the original GMT-Master in the mid-1950s. Today, Rolex offers the Pepsi bezel in both stainless steel and 18k white gold models.

  • Stainless Steel GMT-Master II 126710BLRO

  • White Gold GMT-Master II 126719BLRO

The stainless steel model can be paired with the sporty three-link Oyster bracelet or the more formal five-link Jubilee bracelet, featuring a black dial. There is a higher expectation to pay for these models in the secondary market than in retail.

The white gold version, available exclusively with the Oyster bracelet, offers a choice between a blue or stunning meteorite dial.

2. GMT-Master “Batman” and “Batgirl”

The blue and black bezel, introduced in 2013 as the first bi-colored ceramic bezel in the GMT-Master II collection, quickly gained popularity. Initially, it was only available with the Oyster bracelet, but newer versions now come with the option of either an Oyster or a Jubilee bracelet.

  • GMT-Master II 126710BLNR (2019 – Present)

  • GMT-Master II 116710BLNR (2013 – 2019)

The blue and black bezel models with Oyster bracelets are affectionately known as “Batman,” while those with Jubilee bracelets are dubbed “Batgirl.” Regardless of bracelet choice, these models typically command higher prices on the secondary market.

3. GMT-Master “Root Beer”

The “Root Beer” nickname dates back to vintage two-tone and yellow gold GMT-Masters with brown and gold aluminum bezels. Today, the Root Beer models are available in Everose gold or two-tone steel and Everose gold with brown and black ceramic bezels.

  • Everose Gold GMT-Master II 126715CHNR

  • Two-Tone Everose Gold/Steel GMT-Master II 126711CHNR

The Everose gold GMT-Master II, with a retail price of $40,600, stands out as a luxurious and striking option, favored by those seeking an ultra-luxurious Rolex sports watch.

4. GMT-Master “Sprite”

In 2022, Rolex made waves by introducing a left-handed GMT-Master II model, the ref. 126720TVNR features the crown and date window on the left side of the case. This unique model also introduced a new bezel color combination of black and green, earning it the “Sprite” nickname. Despite its unconventional design, this left-handed GMT quickly became one of the most sought-after Rolex models on the market.

Rolex Day-Date President

Rolex Day-Date President

The Rolex Day-Date, often referred to as the "Rolex President," has long been synonymous with luxury and success. Exclusively crafted in gold or platinum and paired with its signature three-link "President" bracelet, also made of the same precious metal, the Day-Date is a powerful symbol of personal achievement.

Since its debut in 1956, this elegant timepiece, known for its dual calendar windows on the dial, has remained a favorite among influential figures, including presidents, celebrities, and business leaders.

While the Day-Date was initially available in one size, Rolex expanded the collection in the 2000s to include larger models. Today, the Day-Date is offered in both 36mm and 40mm case sizes.

1. Day-Date 36

The most iconic Rolex President is the solid 18k yellow gold Day-Date 36 with a fluted bezel and champagne dial. Numerous high-profile individuals have worn this classic version throughout the years, making it a true symbol of prestige.

The most modern version is the Day-Date ref. 128238 features Rolex's updated movement and is priced at $36,500.

2. Day-Date 40

Introduced in 2015, the Day-Date 40 collection quickly gained popularity as the trend toward larger dress watches took hold. While the yellow gold Day-Date 40 ref. 228238 with a champagne dial remains a favorite; other models with unique features have also risen in demand.

Notably, the anniversary olive green dials in white gold, Everose gold, and platinum variations have become particularly sought-after. Additionally, the ice blue dial variants are exclusive to platinum Rolex models and are highly regarded among collectors.

The Rolex Day-Date, in all its variations, continues to be a timeless representation of success and refinement.

Rolex Datejust

Rolex Datejust

Without mentioning the Rolex Datejust, no conversation about iconic Rolex watches would be complete. Debuting in 1945, the Datejust quickly became a staple in the brand's collection.

Known for its versatility, the Datejust remains one of the most popular Rolex models for both men and women. The current Datejust lineup offers an extensive range of options, including four case sizes (41mm, 36mm, 31mm, and 28mm), a variety of bracelet choices, bezel styles, materials, and dial designs. Unsurprisingly, the Datejust remains Rolex's most diverse and varied collection.

1. Datejust 41

Introduced in 2016, the Datejust 41 is the largest model in the Datejust family. It is offered in full stainless steel or a combination of steel and gold, available in yellow, white, and Everose gold. Though the original Datejust size was 36mm, the 41mm model has gained popularity, particularly among men.

The Datejust 41 models are powered by Rolex's Caliber 3235, the brand's latest self-winding movement. This movement provides a date display and an impressive power reserve of about 70 hours.

2. Datejust 36

Historically seen as the classic Datejust size for men, the 36mm version has also become popular among women. The 36mm size is perfect for various wrist sizes and offers a sleek, comfortable fit.

Like the Datejust 41, the Datejust 36 is available in stainless steel or a steel-and-gold mix and uses the same Caliber 3235. However, it also offers the option of gem-set bezels for added luxury.

3. Women's Datejust Watches

Women's Datejust Watches

Surprisingly, the best-selling Rolex watches are the Datejust models designed for women. In fact, Rolex sells more women’s Datejust models than any other watch in its catalog, proving just how much this classic design resonates across gender lines.

The Lady-Datejust, launched in 1957, was the first women's Rolex with the signature date window and Cyclops magnification lens at 3 o’clock, just like the men’s version, but in a smaller, more compact case. The Lady-Datejust has always featured a self-winding movement — never a quartz model.

Originally offered in a 26mm case, the Lady-Datejust grew slightly in size to 28mm in 2015. This collection provides an array of bezel options (smooth, fluted, or diamond), bracelet choices (Oyster, Jubilee, or President), and dial variations, with options in different metals, gems, and colors. Full gold or platinum Lady-Datejust models can be paired with the President bracelet, a feature typically reserved for the Day-Date collection.

The next size up from the Lady-Datejust is the Datejust 31. Offering a similarly broad selection of configurations, the 31mm model provides more substantial choices with options in full gold and platinum, along with Oyster or Jubilee bracelets. Like the Lady-Datejust, diamonds are also a popular feature on the dial, bezel, or bracelet.

The Rolex Datejust symbolizes timeless elegance and adaptability, offering something for everyone, whether in size, material, or design.

Rolex Sky-Dweller

Rolex Sky-Dweller

The Rolex Sky-Dweller, introduced in 2012, is one of the brand’s most sophisticated timepieces. It showcases a blend of cutting-edge technology and elegant design. This watch stands out for its dual time zone function, a date window, a month indicator, and an annual calendar complication, all housed within a bold 42mm case.

Initially, the Sky-Dweller wasn’t an instant success, but its popularity skyrocketed once more accessible stainless steel and two-tone models joined the original all-gold versions. Rolex further expanded the collection with new Oysterflex bracelet options and additional dial designs.

Over time, the Sky-Dweller has become a key player in Rolex’s dress watch lineup, with several references now highly sought after in the market.

1. Steel Sky-Dweller

The most coveted Sky-Dweller models feature stainless steel cases paired with 18k white gold fluted bezels. Two generations of this variant have been released: the original ref. 326934 and the more recent ref. 336934, which debuted in 2023.

These steel Sky-Dweller watches have various dial colors, with the blue and green dials being the most desirable. The models come with either an Oyster or Jubilee bracelet. As expected, these popular timepieces command a premium in the secondary market, reflecting their high demand.

Other Popular Rolex Models

Other Popular Rolex Models

1. Oyster Perpetual

While the Oyster Perpetual is the simplest and most affordable Rolex model, its demand is extremely high. Since the release of colorful dials in 2020, such as turquoise and Celebration dials, the Oyster Perpetual has gained immense popularity. The 36mm and 41mm versions are particularly popular with men, while the 31mm model has become a favorite among women.

2. Explorer

The Explorer is Rolex’s entry-level sports watch, known for its robustness and legibility. Though its connection to Mt. Everest is largely a myth, the Explorer has been a consistently popular model since the 1950s. The 36mm version remains a classic, with a newer 40mm model introduced in 2021.

3. Yacht-Master Titanium

The Yacht-Master, initially launched in 1992, was a success but became even more popular after the introduction of the titanium version in 2023. As Rolex’s first-ever titanium watch, the Yacht-Master 42 Titanium (ref. 226627) has garnered significant demand. With its limited availability, this model has become as hard to obtain as the coveted Panda Daytona.

Conclusion

Rolex has built a legacy with iconic timepieces that blend timeless design, innovation, and unmatched prestige. From the versatile Sky-Dweller to the classic Oyster Perpetual, these models have captured the hearts of collectors and everyday wearers alike.
